How we're uniting our Capital City
London is already home to some of the most impressive urban developments in the world. Now, with plans for the 2012 Olympics well underway, it’s set to be home to even more impressive developments – with Balfour Beatty and Carillion playing a crucial role.
The £363m East London Line project, which is the first of two phases, will extend the existing East London Line to Dalston Junction in the North and New Cross Crystal Palace and West Croydon in the South.
The contract, scheduled for completion in 2010 will involve railway works including track, signalling, telecommunications and electrification, and major civil engineering works including the construction of four large new bridges, new stations and a new depot at New Cross Gate.
The benefits will not just be logistical. In helping to address the imbalance in rail services across the capital, the Overground will also trigger substantial development and regeneration initiatives in some of London's most deprived boroughs. Indeed, the planned route would serve 80% of the most deprived wards in the capital – enabling residents within these areas to travel to major job hubs (including Canary Wharf) and equally, making these areas more desirable. |
